Maria Assif is a native of Morocco. She speaks Arabic, French, and English fluently, with some knowledge of Spanish. She got her B.A. in English, with a focus on literature, at the University of Hassan II in Casablanca in 1996. Thanks to a Fulbright Scholarship, she was able to puruse a Masters Degree in English at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio from 1997 to 1999. Maria then decided to stay at Case to pursue her doctorate degree. In 2005, Maria received her Ph.D. in English, with a triple specilization: Minorities' Literatures, Rhetoric and Composition, and Women's Studies. In August 2005, Maria joined Truman College as a full-time Assistant Professor of English and Communications, where she's been teaching ever since.

Maria's life-long passion is teaching. Since the age of 18, she has been teaching different classes, mainly Freshman and Advanced Composition, 19th and 20th century American Literature, ESL speech and writing, Business Writing, and Technical Communication. While at Case Western Reserve University, Maria held different administrative positions, such as the ESL Graduate Program Coordinator, Assistant Director to the Women's Center, and Graduate Teaching Mentor.

Maria's academic and professional areas of interest are teaching pedagogy, developmental education, gender and women's studies, global studies, genre studies, and ethnic American literatures. Maria has participated in different conferences in the U.S. as well as Europe. She has a co-authored one article about Developmental Education, which is published in the Journal of Global Studies in Education. She is currently working on a short story and an academic article on Arab American Literature.
